The mobile industry is an ever-changing landscape. WebOS was one of the first major mobile platforms to fully adopt HTML5 as the future of mobile app development, and of course we wanted to get in early and get a head start. WordPress for webOS launched in mid-2011 and saw many new users in a short period of time. Then HP dropped their new product line, including the TouchPad, and many deemed webOS to be dead. This was definitely not the case.

Open Source unites us.

Recently webOS was released as an Open Source HTML5 platform for any app developers to build their apps on. This, while the whole mobile industry is turning more and more to web solutions over native apps and Open Source in favor of proprietary systems. If done right, a webOS app can now run on any tablet or smart phone out there.

With this in mind, we’re saddened by the the recent layoffs in the webOS engineering division at HP. Our thoughts are with all those affected by the layoff. However, we’re still as excited as ever about web technologies and can only see great things happening to webOS and the mobile, Open Source web in the future.

We’re very excited to give you a new way to blog. If you have a HP TouchPad you can download the app today! Just open the App Catalog on your device and search for “WordPress” to get started.

WordPress for webOS enables you to manage your blog wherever you happen to be at the time. It’s available in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, Italian, Dutch, and Japanese.

The app uses the innovative Cards feature, which allows you to quickly switch between managing, editing, and browsing content. Tap an email address or website URL within the app and a new card is launched and stacked for fast and intuitive navigation.

Highlights

Sliding panels make it easy to manage comments, drafts, posts, and pages. Tap any item to drill down further.
The visual editor enables you to format text, add links, and embed media into your posts and pages.
Works with both WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress blogs.
The app notifies you of new pending comments.
WordPress Stats built in (requires Jetpack for self-hosted blogs).
